The Juniper Island Canoe Club is a fun, introductory paddling program for children aged 3 years and older. The program runs three mornings a week, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Please note: Children will need a paddle and an appropriate PFD. For their safety, we prefer children do NOT wear shoes in canoes unless they are tightly fitting water shoes.
We are excited to introduce a new reporting structure to the canoeing program this year. The levels will be named after places on Stony Lake! Participants will tour around Stony as they achieve their canoe levels.
Classes will still be divided into PreSchool, Basic and Advanced but each of those classes will have a variety of levels to be achieved prior to moving to the next class.
· Preschool Padding will be geared towards 3-5 year olds and will focus on learning about canoeing through fun and games.
· The Basic program will be geared towards 5-8 year olds. Paddlers will work through a series of levels which are gearing towards preparing them for the ORCKA program.
· Once paddlers have completed the Basic levels, they will be prepared for the Advanced program.
The Advanced levels are based on the skills recognized by the Ontario Recreational Canoeing and Kayaking Association (ORCKA) which is a nationally recognized program. This program is geared towards children who are older than 8.
The Racing portion of the paddling program is for those kids interested in improving their racing technique in preparation for the regattas. We will be hosting two racing clinics. These clinics will be held on Monday, July 15th and July 22rd both at 6:30.
