A special acknowledgement to the first responders, some of whom are active members of our Juniper Island community. Announcements:

Important update to members regarding Starry Stonewort (SSW) - an aquatic invasive algae

A Starry Stonewort Committee under the Environment Council comprised of representatives of all lake associations and the broader lake community has been established. We are hoping to limit the spread of SSW beyond known and confirmed locations in Gilchrist Bay and Lost Channel by short term actions including education on identifying SSW, avoiding areas where it exists and using best management practices to remove it. Over the fall and winter, the SSW Committee will continue to research management options for spring and summer 2020 and beyond.

Information will continue to be updated on the Environment Council website (http://www.environmentcouncil.ca/) as well as all the lake associations participating on the SSW committee including: Association of Stony Lake Cottagers, Upper Stoney Lake Assoc., Kawartha Park Cottagers' Assoc, Stony Lake Yacht Club, Birchcliff Property Owners Association, Juniper Point Cottage Owners Association, Environment Council.

Additionally, members of your association can contact the committee by email at: starrystonewort@gmail.com should they have questions or spot SSW on the lake.

Halls Glen Development

The Friends of the Drumlins of Dummer have asked that the ASLC share with our members their appeal for assistance in fighting a development plan for a 52 house subdivision to be built north west of Halls Glenn. "This is only 2km from Harbourtown McCrackens Landing. This group of houses, each with its own well and septic, is not only inappropriate to drop in a country setting, but also will add additional traffic to our lake and demand on it's infrastructure. The neighbourhood group is hoping you can help with donations for a legal fund, volunteering your time or most importantly by adding your presence to the LPAT hearing being held on September 30th at the Warsaw municipal office".

Elaine Hilker is the Chair of "Friends of the Drumlins of Dummer" and would be happy to field questions and receive donations: Elaine's contact information: drumlinsofdummer@yahoo.com // (705) 933-8266. Updates can be found on the Facebook page.

Programs Wrap-Up

This season was another great year for ASLC programs. With the addition of the Arts and Crafts activity and the restructuring of the canoeing program, we saw strong enrolment and great engagement from the community. Also noted is the improvement and use of the Play Space - located at the back of the store.

A special shout-out to Jeanne Medland, who revamped the canoeing program to include a creative map illustrating how each child graduates to the next level in the program. The kids loved it as did the instructors -- thank you Jeanne!

Yoga:

Thank you to everyone who came out for a yoga or fitness class this summer at Juniper Island in our beautiful wooden pavilion! It was an outstanding summer with more classes offered and new teachers.

Gratitude to Jenny Chambers and Pam Rankin for 8 weeks of teaching fitness, yoga & pilates. We offered 8 classes a week (beginner to advanced) with options for our older and younger cottagers.

If you are a fitness or yoga teacher interested in teaching summer 2020 please email Jenny chambers5lake@gmail.com

Property Update:

We wanted to note that the new waste receptacles and clear bags have been a great success this summer. With the addition of composting, this system helped to reduce waste on the island. As well, the water filtration system filled 4,700 water bottles over the summer - further reducing waste.

Regatta Wrap-Up
A big thank you to everyone who helped make the regatta a success! There was beautiful weather and so many competitors paddling and lining up to the start line. While the afternoon breeze made line up a little tricky, there was some great skill on display all day long.

Did you leave something on the docks on Regatta Monday? A lost and found bin has been started. It’s under the ASLC board next to the museum/library door.

Thanks to every competitor, supporter, and the crew of skilled volunteers under Jennifer Angelopoulos’ leadership who made Monday such a good day. These traditions only happen when the community comes together – so many thanks to all!

Island Notes
We are working towards a bottled water free environment on Juniper Island. Please bring your reusable bottle and refill as needed in the store.

You will have noticed some changes to our waste collection system on the island. We are working hard to reduce our waste and ensure the right waste goes in the right container. Take a second before tossing something into the contains and make sure to place it where it belongs. Bags with mixed recycling, waste, and food scrapes are not accepted at the dump.

One-time Volunteers Needed
We are in need of Boat Valets for Ladies Luncheon (July 10th), set-up and take down for the Regatta (August 6th) and Art Show (August 10th), and Judges for the Kids Masquerade Ball (July 31st). We’re happy to write letters for those high schoolers needing to earn and track volunteer hours.

For those who attended the AGM, you would have heard our President’s plea for folks able to help with the Square Dance. This longtime weekly event, recently featured in Cottage Life Magazine, needs a few cottagers to keep it going strong. If you can do one-time or a few times this summer we’d be grateful.

If you’re interested in any of these one-time roles, please contact Director, Social - Brett Somerville at somervillebp@aol.com.

Donations: If you’re inclined to support the ASCL or the Regatta through a donation, you can make one through our new site. All donations help to keep Juniper Island going and to make the Regatta successful.

Stay Informed
We try to limit our e-mails to you to once a week unless there is something extra special or significant to be shared. If you want to stay in the loop on ‘in-between’ announcements, follow us on Facebook or Instragram: @ASCLjuniper.

Hello ASLC Community! Details on the New Registration System

download.png

With the launch of our new membership and registration system this past month, we know there are lots of questions. Below we’ve tried to provide some clear directions for you. Need help navigating? We’ll be at Juniper each morning this week, or available via e-mail at programs@aslcmembers.ca.

Thanks to everyone who joined us at the AGM, members BBQ and inaugural Sustainable Cottaging Day! Juniper was jumping with energy on Saturday as the season kicked off with sunshine and the sounds of friends connecting after a long winter. Summer really is here.

Details on the New Registration System

On our website is a handy info sheet about getting started with your ASLC MINDBODY account. It doesn’t cover everything, so we’ve added a few additional notes below that we hope you find helpful.

Registering someone other than yourself?
If you are registering your child for a program, during the registration process you’ll have an opportunity to Add New Client. If you select this option, you’ll then be able to select which child to assign the registration to. This assumes you have already added your kids in to your profile.

Still haven’t purchased a membership?
Our programs are for members-only. If you have not purchased a membership for yourself or your family, please do so prior to classes starting. If you’re wondering which membership if right for you, take a look at our membership policy.

To purchase a membership, create your profile in the ASLC MINDBODY site, then navigate to the Online Store, select Services, choose Membership in the drop-down menu, and then choose the correct Membership for your situation.

As folks get settled into the system, we will be placing restrictions on registrations based on membership. This means if you haven’t purchased a membership, you may lose access to programs.

Guests and Guest Memberships
The only programs a guest can attend are Yoga and Fitness classes using a daily pass option. As the sponsoring member, you will need to be attending class with your guest. Please note a change in our process: the guest will need to have a profile created in our registration system. The guest or the sponsoring member can pay for the class. Please arrive to class with enough time to sign-in. Members can sponsor the same guest up to 5 times a season.

If you have friends or family up for a week or two who would like to access programs and services on Juniper, then a guest membership may be the right option. To sponsor a guest membership, e-mail Hilary at membership@aslcmembers.ca so we can set up their account.

Yoga and Fitness Passes
There are several great options for those who attend our EXPANDED Yoga and Fitness classes. The unlimited passes allow for access to Fitness Swim in addition to classes in the Pavilion! You can purchase your pass online, and then check in at class to have your pass verified before hitting the mat.

To purchase a pass: navigate to the ASLC MINDBODY site, select Online Store > services > Yoga and Fitness passes.

Check out the New Arts & Crafts program at Juniper!

Check out some of what will be made in the new Arts and Crafts class. Spots are filling up fast! Register soon so that you don’t miss out.

ARTS AND CRAFTS

New this year and on the days that your child is not canoeing, we are really excited to offer an arts and crafts class on Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9:15 – 10:15

This class will be geared to 4-10 year olds.  Participants will have the opportunity to try out a variety of different mediums to develop their self-expression.  The primary focus will be fun but we will throw in a little art history and technique building as well.

Since we know it is hard to find time for yourself when you are the parent of young children, we have scheduled our early paddling class and our art classes at a time that will allow the parents to participant in our stretch yoga on Tuesday and Thursday or Pilates on Monday or Wednesday.

Here is an overview of the program offerings:

Week 1

Theme: Nature with coffee filters

Enjoy designing coffee filters and crafting them into beautiful snowflakes, flowers, and butterflies that you can hang up around your cottage or homes.

Week 2

Theme: Bringing rocks to life and decorative Garden Pots

Have fun bringing rocks to life by painting them and decorating garden pots to be used to add a special touch to your gardens at Ston(e)y or at your home.

Week 3

Theme: Cosmic Suncatchers

Create beautiful homemade suncatchers that you can hang up to add some extra colour around your cottage or home on those sunny days!

Week 4

Theme: Painting and stamping with utensils found in nature

Enjoy collecting many different pieces of nature found around Juniper Island and use them to create masterpieces to show off to family and friends!

 Week 5

Theme: Creativity

Enjoy being creative by using the materials provided to design and create your own special mixed medium project!
